Life of Fred

... As Serious as It Needs to Be.

Life of Fred Mathematics

Who is Fred?

Answer #1

Fred Gauss was born on the western slopes of the Siberian mountains. The Life of Fred books follow his life from his birth until he is six years old. His age varies depending on the book and does not follow his life in chronological order.

Most of the books cover his time teaching at KITTENS University. He first encounters the need for a new part of mathematics in his daily life and then he explains how to do it. Students will not have to ask "When are we ever going to use this stuff? again because Fred has shown them how it applies to daily life.

Answer #2

At 22 years of age, Stan Schmidt, the author of the Life of Fred series, became a full-time high school teacher. It was in his first semester of teaching that Fred came to life. Fred's first appearance drawn on the blackboard was brief - he was going fishing. He began to appear more often and soon became a regular part of Stan Schmidt's presentation of math in the classroom.

For eleven years Stan taught at college levels and he brought Fred along with him. The life story of Fred continued to develop.

Retiring early and living in Reno, he began writing the Life of Fred series. Two hours each day, starting at 4 a.m., Stan and Fred work on the next book. To be more accurate it should be pointed out that technically, Stan is a co-author since Fred is very much involved. It takes a rambunctious, full of energy at four o'clock in the morning child to get the day rolling that early!
